What am I working on?
I think it is important for creatives to share what they are working on in order to stay accountable and be open to critiques and dialogue. So this is what I am working on! I’ve started taking a couple of online courses including a class on creating an online portfolio for children’s book illustration. If you know me you know that one of my top career goals it to become a book cover designer and children’s book illustrator. I even have an extensive collection of children’s books by some of my favorite artists and illustrators for inspiration. Nerdy? Perhaps. One of my favorite illustrators is Oliver Jeffers. I have several of his books. One of which being, “A Child of Books.” I am obsessed with the illustrations. Oliver Jeffers and Sam Winston, his cowriter and illustrator, incorporated the use of text from classic literature to make various environments, including a huge wave of words that the children sail upon. You have to look it up if you haven’t seen it! I highly recommend giving it a read. Speaking of children’s books, I am writing and illustrating my very own! I’ve mentioned this before, but the title of my book is, “The Misadventures of Hugo Delacroix.” It is about a French mime who exists in black and white while the world he inhabits is vibrant and colorful. He is followed by a monster that represents his own grief, depression, and anxiety. Throughout the book he realizes how beautiful life can be and eventually makes room for the “monsters” in his life. I too have made room for the monsters of depression and grief in my own life and I hope that my book may help others do just that. Those things never really go away, at least, not in my experience. But they can grow smaller, more manageable, and a little less scary. I am also working on improving my portrait skills. Portraits are so hard and I’m hoping to get way better at it. I have a few reference photos that I am super excited about. Make sure to check my portfolio for updates! Last, but certainly not least, I am redoing my room. I just repainted it yesterday and I’m obsessed with the color. It’s a light shade of sage. I’m a fan. It makes my space feel so much bigger and brighter. Now it’s time to build all of my furniture. Arguably the most frustrating activity. I do have to build everything soon though because I’m currently sleeping on my couch until everything is finished. Sometimes you have to suffer through the process to get to the end result you’re proud of. I would love to hear about all of the great things YOU’RE working on! Feel free to send me a DM or comment on Instagram! I am looking forward to connecting with you!
Happy Creating!
